Tailwind
As I have been on a biking frenzy the last two years (I commute to work daily), I have ridden through all kinds of weather; storms, cold clear days, high wind, beautiful sunny days, hail, etc. Early this school year I wrote about how I try to transform my thinking about a headwind experience from being a struggle into an opportunity to get get a better workout, to exercise the strength God provides. On a few occasions, though, the wind will shift and be at my back. These days are exhilarating! When I am riding with the wind, I can go so fast now! I love flying past cars that are stuck in traffic, or nearly keeping pace with exhaust emitting beasts next to me.
A tailwind applies as powerful a spiritual analogy. Jesus refers to the Spirit as a wind that blows wherever it pleases. John 3:9, "You hear its sound, but you cannot tell where it comes from or where it is going. So it is with everyone born of the Spirit." Galatians 5:25 teaches us that, "Since we live by the Spirit, let us keep in step with the Spirit." Our job is to keep our eyes open for where the Spirit of God is blowing, and to move with him.
When I am moving in the same direction that the Spirit is trying to push me, life is inspiring! I'm not saying it is easy, because God wants us to do all you can to move along with him. However, it gets my heart pumping to see God at work around me and working through me. It is incredible to know that you are moving in the direction God wants you to.
On the other hand, when you move against the wind, fighting against the Spirit's nudges toward loving someone you can't stand, toward having peace in a terrible situation, in developing patience with the most frustrating people (Galatians 5), then you are not keeping step with the Spirit. Or, if you are working with an organization trying to create something "for God" too soon, pushing to build something in your own power, for your own glory, though it might be a "worthy cause" it is draining and depressing. So, keep in step with the Spirit! You don't know what direction the Spirit is coming from or where he is going. Daily humility and adjustment to your heart and direction is required to keep up. There is no better inspiration than feeling the Spirit's wind at your back.
