Riding Through the Winter

Riding Through the Winter

The topic of discouragement was discussed among my friends around The Center last week. We prayed that God would give us the courage to keep going. Remembering and revealing this story is how God helped me see his answer a few days later.

I started bike commuting in August 2008. When cold weather hit that year I recall realizing that if I can snow ski in Idaho mountains I can ride a bike in the Boise Winter. I met the second Winter[[ Display images to view this. Winter biking. ]] with the same determination; the cold would not stop me. I was surprised at my thoughts recently when temperatures dropped. For two years I knew that nothing could deter me from riding through the winter. I will drive only when there is ice on the road. So far I have held to this. Then, as I saw frost forming on my thick winter gloves the other morning, I began to have feelings I did not expect. I began to think about the burning sensation that the bitter cold brings. I remembered the sting of freezing rain and hail pelting my face when caught in a storm. Is it really worth it to keep this discipline? What am I trying to prove? Why not just drive like everyone else?

I realized that my winter riding parallels any of life's struggles. When life becomes difficult...
