What's New at The Center?

Steve Barry and many other volunteers have been busy for a while now working on three new outdoor areas for all to enjoy!

The main area you will notice right away is out front. The stone patio with a hand-built large picnic table was completed several weeks ago. Come by to enjoy it while there is still some warm weather.

The other two areas may not jump out at you right away. Look around the the side and back and you will find two new sitting areas.

Wes Grover and Rachelle Roberson were quite happy when the side patio was completed. Each of these areas have tables now and are ready to use. Thanks to Steve and all the volunteers who helped!

In addition to the patios, we have added one new computer for public use in the library. You will find it at the desk on the back wall of the library.

Molehills

Molehills

Recently on my bike ride to work I hit the little hill going over the interstate and needed to down-shift for the climb. Inadvertently I instead UP-shifted, making it harder to pedal! I lost all momentum and had to react quickly to get into the right gear, which was actually lower than the original I should have been in.

As I struggled up what is normally barely a rise in the pavement for me, God showed me this spiritual analogy: when we hit a place in life where it is tough to get through, where we have a struggle, a hill to climb, but we react in the opposite way....

I am convinced that one of the nearest equivalents to washing feet in our modern world is washing dishes. Just as when Jesus tied a towel around his waist and knelt before each of his disciples, a lowly and mundane task that anyone in that room could have done, so it is with the day-in and day-out task of cleaning up from a meal. No one wants to do it, but anyone in the room could.

My wife was recently reminded of her parents' selfless acts as they strove to follow Christ. This month marked 12 years since my wife and her sisters gathered around their Mother's death bed and July was 22 years since their Father died. The tears of goodbyes that flowed much too early in life for both Dad and Mom began to flow again today as we recalled the memories my wife wrote to share with you. Please take a moment to hear her heart.

Improvements at The Center
Work continues on several projects for all to enjoy. Steve Barry of Cornerstone is taking the lead on planning and working to add a patio to the front lawn. This is still a work in progress. If you can lend a hand, please ask Steve what remains to be done.

John Free has been hard at work improving the safety of our stairs by extending the platform of each step. Look closely as this labor intensive task may not appear to be significant, but the safety improvement is huge.

Thanks for everyone's hard work in serving our community!

Sharing a need

We are doing our best to be faithful to the mission God has called us to. Striving to obey the guidance God has given to us toward working together in God's Kingdom, working to offer classes that will bring a message of what life is really about, giving students a place to explore God's realities, providing a location for Christians to meet, work and play...

We recently had a fund-raising evening that brought in about $5,000, but to meet the need (after many budget cuts) about $20,000 is still needed for the fiscal year through June 2011.

Please pray to see if God is guiding you to financially support the Biblical Studies Center. Thanks to everyone that has been giving in so many ways as we serve God together.

Daily Commute

The daily commute is a mundane necessity that all of us fight to make as short as possible. We scour the map to find the fastest route. We watch traffic patterns to avoid having to slow down so we can reach our destination in the shortest amount of time. It seems like a small victory when we hit all green lights and make record time.

In my daily commute I have made significant changes. I no longer drive. I bike. I have transformed my mundane 40 to 60 minutes per day into an hour and a half workout. Beyond the physical benefits, I have found a time to pray, to think, to dream. I pay attention to the people around me more. I have conversations with fellow-cyclists. However, I do have to pay close attention to those drivers around me who are oblivious to the things around them, caught in their own world, trying to make it to work or home. I wear bright yellow reflective clothes and have bright flashing lights to try to catch the eye of those rushing past.

Think of your short range destinations: Graduation, new job, marriage, children... How about your longer range goals: Building a home, advancing in your career, becoming a leader, having your children leave home... Are you treating life like a mundane commute, fighting through the traffic and trials until you reach a destination? Are you rushing through it, missing the real lessons God is teaching you along the way? Mindlessly treating life's destinations as if they are the reason for life leads to a mundane, lifeless journey. Until you are "there", even people along the journey near you can seem like interruptions or nuisances. Do you tend to "run over" those around you when they get in your way, missing the blessings and lessons God has for you in those encounters?
